A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was proposed pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
