Sheffield Wednesday Deals with Serious Challenges, Says New Football Authority

'We will play a key role in football's future' - newly appointed regulator the new chairman

The Championship club's persistent issues represent a a "serious issue" and the new football authority is seeking powers to examine team situations in comparable cases, the newly appointed chairman the regulator has declared.

In a wide-ranging interview, the regulator, who was appointed on Monday, showed understanding towards the club's followers.

The regulator engaged with four supporters' associations associated with the Championship side this week.

The football club have been struggling on and off the field in the current year, with the club delaying salary disbursements on multiple instances, including in last month.

"Obviously the club has become a serious issue for football authorities and a significant problem for football," Kogan told.

"Sheffield Wednesday is one of the great brands for the English game and recently we have met fan representatives.

"Our aim is to acquire the ability... which will allow us to have Wednesday and comparable cases referred to us if they warrant scrutiny and dealt with."

Monetary Issues and Leadership Concerns

The team's struggling chairman Dejphon Chansiri stated during the off-season he would be open to selling the club at Hillsborough, but he has been unable to finalize an agreement with interested parties.

Delayed salary payments on time in earlier this year caused limitations by the football authorities in mid-year, stopping Wednesday from completing any player acquisitions for the following recruitment periods, although those limitations were removed in August.

Official's Viewpoint

The chairman stated: "The job [of the regulator] is there for the fans of Sheffield Wednesday, other clubs in similar situations where supporters are loyal to a local institution that has represented their community in multiple situations.

"I have absolute sympathy for the club's situation, as I do for each organization that since 1992 have gone to the wall, or approached financial ruin, for reasons that have nothing to do with the followers."

When asked if the oversight body could require an chairman to relinquish a club if they are considered unfit, the chairman responded: "If your question is 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the response would be once we collect the information and know what's going on, we will."

But the regulator clarified that forcing owners to sell clubs would be viewed as the ultimate measure and the regulator would prefer to collaborate with owners.

"Our least desirable course of action is commence engagement with an specific team, an specific proprietor, without being able to work with that owner to try and resolve the issues that the club's facing and the chairman's encountering," the chairman stated.

"In actuality, when you look back over the history of the game, over the past few decades there have been certain proprietors, a small minority, but particular people who have shown negligence in the manner they have operated their clubs and ultimately don't wish to take responsibility for the coming years."

'Errors may undo substantial development'

Kogan met with representatives from 110 clubs to lay out the remit of the oversight body this week and stated it constituted a "forward-thinking discussion" with a "substantial involvement" from the National League to the Premier League.

"It's a job that's actually really important, because if we get it wrong, if the football community fails, the extraordinary progress that's been made necessary will vanish rapidly," Kogan said.

"This represents everyone's worst fear in the terms of English football is a substantial accomplishment - we must maintain momentum.

"There's an enormous amount of money flowing into the game and has been channeled for the recent generations, because certainty is lacking it will continue to come into football, which is part of the rationale behind I think we have to adopt a precise perspective on challenges and obviously, of the immediate future."

Top Flight Apprehensions

Elite division representatives objected to the establishment of an oversight body because of concerns about detrimental effects on the elite division's competitive balance, but the chairman responded: "I completely endorse the prosperity and expansion as an financial organization of the elite league.

"I of all people understand the concern of undermining the Premier League as a premium product of the nation. But concurrently, if you talk to the Premier League after this week's discussion, they would have had a significant degree of comfort -and, in fact, they have been informing us confidentially they have a considerable comfort."

Ideological Links

Kogan is still facing a "full inquiry" by the official appointments authority after he acknowledged providing funds to the political party in the past.

The official donated money to Culture Secretary the politician's campaign, along with that of the government leader.

"I have been entirely transparent regarding my previous political affiliation [with Labour], and that ideological connection terminated the day the select committee approved my appointment," the chairman stated.

"I am no longer involved in any sort of politics."
